Women and minorities encouraged to apply

Just a quickie for now, but I had to comment:

I have seen quite a few job descriptions with a little “women and minorities encouraged to apply” tag at the bottom.

Really?

Women have been voting for about 90 years. Women are editors-in-cheif, CEOs and top executives. Some choose not to get married and some forgo pot roasts and casseroles for take out. And that’s ok.

I think these attempts at equality make us less equal. This is why I’m not a fan of affirmative action. The Equal Rights Amendment has been languishing on the Hill because women largely have equal opportunities already.  I have never felt second best because I’m a woman. Maybe I’ve just been in very progressive places?

Let’s do a remix: “Recent graduates encouraged to apply.” Yes. I would like to see that one. Or, maybe: “Dads recently laid off due to economic implosion and need a job to feed their children are encouraged to apply.”

Singling out women and minorities makes me a little weary of your company. Do I want to work for you if I think you will treat me differently because of my gender?
