A foot in the [wrong] door

My wonderful friends have been passing on writing-related positions to me that they get through various list-servs. A little while back I received two different e-mails about the same job: an administrative assistant position at the D.C. bureau for one of Spain’s largest newspapers, El Pais. Both friends urged me to apply because it would be a foot in the door and might lead to opportunities for generating content down the road.

Last night I brought up the subject to the husband of one of my mom’s friends. This woman is raising money for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer walk this fall fall. She hosted a party last night and mom, who sells Silpada,  and her friend, a representative for Beauty Control (both direct sales companies) donated their proceeds to the cause.  I had nothing else to do, Mom said there would be “famous” margaritas and I would have to model jewelry for the guests all night. Pull my arm.

So anyway, this woman’s husband began his career as a broadcaster out west and eventually switched to the sales/marketing side of the news biz. I asked him what he thought about the administrative assistant positions. “It would be a foot in the door…but it would be the wrong door,” he said.  Administrative assisants usually advance to the sales and marketing side. I’m better off getting an internship.

Just a little advice from an expert for all of those confused like me.
