The 100 Most Beautiful Words in English
(via id0be1ieve)
Had to go there because I’ll always remember my 10th grade English teacher saying that gonorrhea is one of the most beautiful words in the English language:
“Gonorrhea, according to Willard R. Espy, is the most beautiful word in the English language. Other words on the list are gossamer, lullaby, meandering, mellifluous, murmuring, onomatopoeia, Shenandoah, summer afternoon, and wisteria.” (How to Get Rid of Things)
I just don’t think I see any beauty in “the clap.”
This Alpha Dictionary list, which doesn’t include gonorrhea (hmm…)
Woo:ebullience, effervescent, efflorescence (I like e’s), dulcet (like dulcinea = Don Quijote), chatoyant, panacea, pyrrhic, quintessential, sumptuous, serendipity, murmurous (half because I like the way “mur” rolls off the lips and half because it reminds me of that awesome club in the Atlantic City Borgata)
I’ve always thought the word cochlea was beautiful, as in “Brandon while you’re talking with me on the phone on your way to work, the screeching noise of traffic makes my cochlea feel like it’s in a blender.”
Boo/what??: Tinntinnabulation (tinkling), wherewithal, woebegone, onomatopoeia (it’s always sounded so choppy to me)
I don’t think Ratatouille counts as English.
