The church fair
My editor sent me out to cover a church fair tonight, one of those carnivals that normally take place during the summer. “Be creative with it, don’t feel like you have to stick to the standard news article layout,” he said.
Hello, paintball.
I was hanging out waiting for the reverind to finish dinner and speak with me, so I took a little walk around. Saw the standard carnival rides and games and the local restaurants serving up hamburgers and ice cream. Then I saw a barn with old street signs, rusty metal baking sheets, a firefighter’s boot and other random treasures of the street hanging from the rafters. People were shooting paintballs at these targets. It was homemade, rustic and original. Hello, angle! So I made friends with the volunteers, a middle-aged man and an older woman, who were helping people load and shoot. They gave me a free round of bullets and I hit a stop sign on the first try.
So I stuck around with my new friends for about 15 mins talking to people who came up to play. Some were eager to speak, with others it was like pulling teeth. The downside of going out in the field.
